When it comes to lights in the home it is so easy to make mistakes. Without making an initial plan, houses often end up with badly designed lighting systems with plugs in the wrong places, and no lights where you need them. If you follow these simple tips however you will find that you have a well lit home.
Save money with energy saving bulbs. The home is one of the biggest contributors to global warming, so by exchanging all traditional filament bulbs in the home with LED's or other energy saving bulbs you will be doing your bit for the environment. More than that however you will also be saving yourself money in the process as your electricity bills will reduce. Filament bulbs are not efficient at producing light, using a large amount of electricity and producing heat. LED's and energy saving bulbs do not produce as much heat and much less electricity is used. You might even consider adding a chandelier. These are especially appropriate for the dining room but you could also put one in your entrance hall. These are more affordable than you may think and can imbue your home with a unique cachet. When it comes to buying cheap lights you also have to consider the type of bulb used. Your main choices are fluorescent, incandescent and LED (light emitting diodes). Fluorescents give off a harsh functional illumination which makes them most suitable for task lighting in rooms such as kitchens. You may be tempted to choose incandescent over LED as they're cheaper. However, LED lighting runs much cooler, uses less electricity and lasts much longer.Sitting RoomMake a plan. Have you ever heard the expression "failing to plan is planning to fail?" Never is this truer than when it comes to lighting. Make a plan of sockets and lights and what will be going where. That way you will have the right lights hooked up to the right light switches and the whole lighting scheme will just "flow" right.Entrance HallwayThis is usually the perfect place for a dazzling chandelier. Again you have to be careful that there is room for a tall person to walk underneath the spot where it would hang, and that you buy the right size for the room. Having a chandelier that is too large for the room looks even worse than having one that is too small for the space. You must measure up extremely carefully beforehand if you are to get it right. If there is not enough room for a chandelier then table lamps and floor lamps can look fantastic in a sitting room. You can buy them in all shapes and sizes and to match any type of interior design too. If the room is very large then a chandelier as well as a few lamps may be required. If you live an established residence, or rented accommodation, or just don't want to indulge in major installation work, you can still use affordable lighting to transform your living environment. Many types of lights can be fitted without the need for major structural work.Tip 4Then again, you could replace old, worn out fixtures with modern stylish ones. For example, adding wall lights is a straightforward task. These sconces, as they're known, as easy to fix if you have the electrical supply in place. An even easier method is using table and floor lights to create warm areas of illumination that also function as task lighting.Generally chandeliers aren't used in bedrooms although there isn't really a reason why they shouldn't be. Often bedrooms are not decorated in a formal or grand way and that is perhaps the reason why alternatives to chandeliers are used. Furthermore the chandelier won't be seen as much when placed in a bedroom as when placed in one of the reception rooms downstairs. If you do want a chandelier in the bedroom then matching the size and decor is important.Because of the amount of humidity in the bathroom and all the water, hanging lights of any kind shouldn't be used. Instead you should use lights that are designed for bathroom use only and they should be inset into the ceiling or the walls. It is a good idea to use some kind of lighting around or above the main mirror as it is here you will need to carry out tasks such as applying makeup or brushing teeth. If you are able, try and use dimmer switches in the bathroom as well so that you can have a relaxing bath if you so wish with mood lighting.
There are a lot of ways you can get your home lighting right. Have fun with it if you can, experimenting with floor lamps, table lamps and accent lighting. You can purchase a variety of lamp shades to match your interiors and use different types of lighting to highlight different things around the home.
